Site Tools

Command and Control

The main administrative panel is known as the Command and Control section. From this screen, you can access all of the administrative functions for your site. However, the ability to monitor and moderate Story, Event and User submissions is provided in the Central Administration screen. In the event a new Story, Event or User submission has been entered into the system, the respective item will be saved in the database, but will not be made available for general use until an administrator approves the item.

The administrator has the option of deleting the submission as well as approving it.

Below is a quick description of each administrative function with links to the more detailed documentation on how to use each of these features.

Auto Tag Manager

Auto tags provide the ability to integrate content and features across glFusion. The Auto Tag Manager is where you can do the following:
  • See a list of all available auto tags
  • Set the Permissions for each auto tag
  • Create / Upload custom auto tags
Auto tags Documentation

Bad Behavior

Bad Behavior is a plugin that complements other glFusion spam solutions by acting as a gatekeeper, preventing spammers from ever delivering their junk, and in many cases, from ever reading your site in the first place. This keeps your site’s load down, makes your site logs cleaner, and can help prevent denial of service conditions caused by spammers.
The Bad Behavior administrative interface allows you to do the following:
  • See a list of all access attempts that were blocked and why
  • See a list of all banned IP addresses
  • Ban or un-ban an IP address

Block Administration

A block is a small group of content on the webpage. In a glFusion site, there are left blocks and right blocks, and there can be many on either side. The block editor allows you to create blocks for your website. You would create a block for many reasons. Take for example the What's New block; A user can look at this block and immediately know any recent changes to the website. Or, you could have a Counter block, which keeps track of how many hits your website has received.
The block editor can be accessed by clicking Blocks link at the top of the administrator's menu. Alternatively, you can access the block editor by clicking Blocks on the Command and Control page.

The Calendar Plugin is a great tool which allows users and administrators to create events which will appear in the calendars of users who have appropriate access. Events can include things from appointments to vacations, and everything in between. Event types are entirely customizable.

Clear Template Cache

Some sections of your website are cached for quicker loading (among them the What's New block, Forum Centreblock, and various template files). This means less database calls, quicker page load and fewer server resources consumed.
However whenever you change a file on your site, an old cached version may be retained for a while, and the change may not be immediately apparent. It's thus good practice to clear the cache after any changes.
glFusion Caching System

Many of the options in glFusion are controlled by their configuration setting. There are a large number of configuration options that control various features. This extensive level of configuration drives much of the flexibility of glFusion.
Configuration Guide

Environment Check

The Environment Check will perform some minor diagnostics on your hosting environment to ensure everything is properly configured for glFusion. The check includes the following items:

PHP Settings
Environment check will validate some key PHP settings and inform you if any need to be changed or modified to allow glFusion to work properly.

PHP Extensions
Environment check will validate that you have the required PHP extensions installed and functional. It also validates the graphics settings as well.

Database Information
Environment check will display the current database environment information. Specifically which driver glFusion is using, the DB version, and the collation and character set being using by glFusion and the database.

File / Directory Permission Settings
This will check all the files and directories that glFusion needs to access and ensure that glFusion has the necessary permissions. Any issues in permissions will be highlighted in RED and should be corrected as soon as possible.

File Management

The File Management Plugin is an effective way to manage and share files. The File Manager Plugin takes advantage of the many features of a glFusion powered website, including integrated searching, the latest files block, and full support for the glFusion security model. Among other great benefits, other glFusion plugins may use the File manager to handle all file management.

Logview provides a convenient method to view the glFusion log files online. It is pretty straight forward to use - there is a drop down of the available log files, select which one you want to view and it will be loaded into the logview window.

Mail Users

If you have the proper access rights, you can use the Mail Users feature to email the different groups on your site. For example, if you wanted to email all the marketing employees in your company, you would have to first set up the group using the Group Administration tool. Add the marketing employees to that group, and then you are all set up to email them from that point on.

Media Gallery is a native glFusion plugin that lets you manage your photos and other media (video / audio) on a glFusion powered website. With Media Gallery it is easy to maintain albums of photos, video and music via an easy to use web interface. Media Gallery takes advantage of the many features of a glFusion powered website, including integrated searching, featured albums, random image block and full support for the glFusion security model. Media Gallery has evolved over the years to become a full featured media management system for your glFusion powered website.

Pages (also known as Static Pages

The Static Pages Plugin was originally aimed at creating pages with static content (as opposed to the dynamic pages created by glFusion) - hence the name. Pages like an “about us” page, a mission statement, etc. would come to mind.
Since then, people have used static pages for all kinds of things and with the inclusion of PHP into static pages, even the original name isn't quite right any more. We generally refer to it as the pages plugin.

Plugin Administration

Plugin Administration is where you can add new plugins or disable / remove existing plugins. Plugins allow you to extend the functionality of your glFusion powered site.

SFS User Check

The folks at Stop Forum Spam provide lists of spammers that persist in abusing forums and blogs with their scams, ripoffs, exploits and other annoyances*. They provide these lists so that you don't have to endure the never ending job of having to moderate, filter and delete their rubbish.
Sometimes BOT or spammer username and addresses are not immediately known to Stop Forum Spam. glFusion has a new feature in the Command & Control center that allows you to check your existing site users against the SFS database.
You can select the SFS User Check option and it will display the last 10 user's who registered on your site - checking their email, username, and remote IP address against the SFS database. You can then select to ban or delete the user if they are found.
Be careful on the username matches - many 'generic' user names such as a person's first name, may appear in the SFS database. Look to see if their email or IP address also matched before deleting.
Each time you select SFS User Check it performs a real-time check as each user is displayed. This is why the default list is only 10 users - you can select to display more from the dropdown menu on the list. Keep in mind, it takes some time to perform several look ups, so it may take several seconds for the page to display.

Social Integrations

glFusion now supports social sharing and follow integration, allowing a much more integrated social media interaction. You can configure which of the pre-installed social media sites you wish to support for social sharing and user following. You can also setup your site's social memberships to create a social follow me block in the footer.

glFusion includes multiple layers of defense against spam, the Spam-X plugin is one of the key defenses. It has a modular architecture that allows it to be extended with new modules to fight the spammer's latest tricks, should the need arise.

Story Administration

Stories (also referred to as articles) are one of the primary content types in glFusion. Stories are organized by topics, where each story has a primary topic association and an optional alternate topic association. Stories are a great way to keep your site members updated on news.
Story Administration Documentation

glFusion allows you to have certain items queued for review before they become live on your site. For example, if you allow users to post stories, you might want to review them first to ensure the content is appropriate. Once you review the submission, you can either approve or decline it.
Submission Queue Documentation

Topic Administration

Topics are admin-defined logical containers that are intended to allow the grouped association of stories, their related comments and also content blocks to a single subject.
Topic Administration Documentation

Trackback Administration

A trackback allows one website to notify another about an update. It is one of four types of linkback methods for website authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their posts. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking to their articles.
Trackback Administration Documentation

Upgrade Check

The Upgrade Check will ping the site to determine if there are any core glFusion updates, or plugin updates available for your site.
There are 2 new configuration options:

Update Check Interval
How often to automatically check for new updates (when on the C&C main page)

Send Site Data
if enabled, the site URL will be passed during the update checker and logged on the site. This allows the glFusion team to get a better handle on how many glFusion sites are out there. You can opt out by setting this to false and no data is passed or saved on

See Privacy for more information.

User Administration

The User Editor Administration screens are available in order to add, edit or delete users on the site.
The main user display screen will show all users sorted by UserID in ascending order by default. Searching for a username or part of a username will result in a reduced user list output.
Sorting on columns is accomplished by clicking on the headers for which column you wish to have sorted. Paging will occur after the number of Limit Results is achieved, allowing you to page through results.
In order to edit the details of a user, click on the pencil icon on the specific row for the user. Once a user is chosen to be edited, the details page for the user is shown.
Once edited, the user's detail's page is shown. The administrator is able to affect every aspect of the user from the details page. From altering the username to editing group membership, the administrator has the ability to change everything.
