Migrating from Geeklog

glFusion v1.2.0 supports migrating your existing Geeklog 1.4.1 through v1.6.1 site by performing the Migration process. glFusion does not support migrating Geeklog sites running v1.7.0 or newer.

ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A GOOD BACKUP OF YOUR SITE FILES AND SITE DATABASE BEFORE YOU UPGRADE OR MIGRATE! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

You must be running Geeklog v1.4.1 or newer to migrate. If you have an older Geeklog site, please upgrade it to at least Geeklog v1.4.1 before migrating.

NOTE glFusion's theme engine is very different from Geeklogs. glFusion uses a CSS, non-table based theme engine which is very different than Geeklog's implementation. glFusion does offer legacy theme support, which means any Geeklog theme that is based off their standard Professional theme should work, but you will not get all the new features and benefits available in glFusion. For full details, please see the Legacy Theme section.

The glFusion team recommends that you use the standard Nouveau theme included in glFusion. If you have a heavily customized legacy theme, you may want to stick with Geeklog or at least try the migration on a test system before migrating a production system.

Before you consider migrating from Geeklog to glFusion, ask yourself why? glFusion does not support many of the legacy themes available for Geeklog. If you have a Geeklog based site that meets your needs, you should consider staying with Geeklog. If there is a compelling reason to migrate, we'll do our best to make the process as smooth as possible.

Pre-Conversion Checklist

  • Ensure that all the plugins installed on your site are compatible with glFusion. You may want to check the support forums or with the author of the plugin to determine if it will function properly with glFusion. We are currently aware of the following plugins having issues with glFusion v1.1. If you run any of these plugins, you should disable them before you upgrade your site, and then upgrade them to a compatible version before re-enabling them.
    • glMenu v2.6 and v3.0 - glMenu v3.1 has been released and is compatible with glFusion v1.1.
    • FAQ - FAQ v1.1.0 has been released and is compatible with glFusion v1.1

Installing glFusion

Copy all the glFusion source files to your server. It is important that you maintain the existing directory structure you have with your Geeklog site. This means you must copy the glFusion private/ files to the same location that you have the Geeklog private files (the directory where db-config.php or config.php is stored). You must also copy the glFusion public_html/ files to the same directory where the Geeklog public_html/ files are stored.

Some users had to change the access on the 3 .dist files before running the migration. These are db-config.php.dist, siteconfig.php.dist, and libcustom.php.dist. To do this do a CHMOD 777 on each file before migrating.

Once you have uploaded all the files, open your browser and navigate to the glFusion installation wizard. The path to this file will depend on where you chose to put the glFusion files on your web server. The default location is:

http://Your_glFusion_Site/admin/install/index.php

Choose the Migrate a Geeklog v1.4.1+ Site from the Task dropdown. The migration wizard is designed to automate the upgrade process. Simply follow the migration steps.

Once you have completed the upgrade be sure to rename the admin/install directory to something that only you would know the name.

Congratulations! You now have glFusion successfully installed. Please take a moment to review the rest of this manual to better understand how to administer the features and functions of this software.

Post Upgrade Issues

Once you have completed your migration to glFusion, you will want to ensure your site is functioning properly. You may want to upgrade any plugins you have installed on your site to the latest versions available for glFusion. See the glFusion Plugin Download Section for the latest releases of glFusion plugins.

If you use the Chameleon theme, you will need to upgrade to the latest version available for glFusion.
