Upgrading

Media Gallery v1.6 has a safe upgrade feature that automatically turns off certain parts of Media Gallery if the installed version does not match the code version. This prevents SQL errors or other errors from occuring during the time you upload the new code to your server, but before you run the plugin upgrade.

Certain Media Gallery functions such as autotags, the Random Image and What's New blocks, etc. check to see if the version installed is the same as the version of the source files. If they are different, Media Gallery temporarily disables these features to ensure there are no database errors. This gives you time to run the upgrade process after copying the new source files.

Media Gallery requires that you have the Caching Template Library installed.

At the end of the upgrade, Media Gallery will validate that you have the Caching Template Library installed. If you do not, Media Gallery will warn you and provide a link to download the library.

Standard Upgrade Process

Upgrading Media Gallery is a very simple process. You simply need to move the new Media Gallery files to your web server, just like an normal installation. Instead of running the installation program, you will execute the glFusion Plugin Update.

Since it is possible that there may be database structure changes during the upgrade process, Media Gallery will temporarily disable the Random Image and What's New blocks, and all autotags until the glFusion Plugin Upgrade has been performed. This limits the risk of your site visitors seeing a SQL error or other error during the time the new Media Gallery source files are uploaded and the glFusion Plugin upgrade has run.

To perform an upgrade, follow these steps:

  • BACK UP YOUR EXISTING ENVIRONMENT!
  • SAVE YOUR TEMPLATES IF YOU HAVE MADE MODIFICATIONS! You will need to re-apply your customizations to the templates after the upgrade.
  • Refer to the installation instructions for New Installations for detailed instructions on uploading the new Media Gallery distribution to your server. If you are prompted to overwrite existing files, be sure to answer Yes.
  • Go to the glFusion Plugins Menu (from the glFusion Administrator's menu).
  • Select mediagallery plugin from the list.
  • You should have an UPDATE button, select it.

If all goes well, the upgrade should be complete. If there were errors, please review your private/logs/error.log and correct any issues and try the UPDATE again.

Post Upgrade Checks

  • Verify all Media Gallery configuration settings. Go into the Media Gallery Administration Screen and select System Options and verify all your settings are as you would like.
  • Verify that all your autotags are correctly formatted. Depending on your previous version of Media Gallery, there have been several changes to how autotags are used. See Autotags for any usage changes to the autotags.
  • Verify the allowed media types are properly set for your albums. Media Gallery v1.5.0 added 3 new types.
  • If you are upgrading from a v0.8x or v0.9x of Media Gallery, you should rebuild all thumbnails. Media Gallery has the ability to display larger (200×200 pixel) thumbnails, v0.8x and v0.9x created all thumbnails at 150×150 px size. See the Media Gallery Administration Screen for the Rebuild All Thumbnail option.
