Are autotags allowed inside an html block? I'm trying to put an image in the block and it shows the code. If I use the same autotag in a story it works correctly.

Yes - they should, but make sure that Configuration->Miscellaneous->Miscellaneous->Disable Autolinks is set to False.
Just out of curiosity, can you post the autotag here in a 'code' block so I can see?

Guess what happens when you notice the check box that says, "Allow Autotags"?
It works now. Guess I should read down the screen.
