Can I use autotag to display a media object if the album is not viewable to the public?

Dwight, the answer is yes and no

Media Gallery should honor permissions, so if you use an auto tag for an album that is not publically viewable, then it will not appear for a user who does not have permission to see it.

But, we have the hidden attribute for an album which is designed to help in this type situation. You can set the permissions on the album to allow public viewing, but set the hidden attribute to true which will hide the album from everyone but Media Gallery admins. The auto tags from this album will be viewable by everyone.

Does that make sense?
