Does smtp.gmail.com work?

I have been working with email and decided to try smtp verses 'Mail' because, for some reason, my 'Post Cards' were not arriving to my friends AOL.Com mail account. Other mailings would arrive, but not from the Post Card.

As such, I thought the AOL server might think the php mailing was spam so I thought (which could be wrong) that smtp might provide more verification. However, I can not seem to get SMTP to work. I put 'all' the information necessary in the proper form windows, but it says there is an 'error' upon attempting a mailing.

Please let me know whether, or not, the SMTP should work with gmail accounts.

Thanks!

Unless something has changed since I tried this last, Google/GMail requires use of SSL/TLS for SMTP, which the glFusion phpmailer class does not support.

So, the answer is unfortunately no.

Actually, glFusion does support SSL/TLS and works fine with Google / Gmail. I use it every day on my development systems.

Tell me what your SMTP setting are (except for the password) and we'll see if we can't get it fixed up.

Thanks!

Whoops! That's what I get for not going back and checking - looks like phpmailer was updated since I tried it last. My apologies!

Note that TCP port 465 outbound to the Internet from the webserver must be enabled, some hosting providers block this, and port 25, as they want to contain SMTP connections to be local to try to battle the SPAM kiddies ...

Ok... I guess this could be a hosting issue. I have attached an image of my SMTP settings; which are the same used to send mail through Opera.

I am on a shared server... so spam protection might be the issue.

What do you think?

It is possible the hosting provider is blocking all outbound ports except HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP, so you may not be able to contact Google's mail server. I would shoot a question to your host's help desk and ask if they allow outbound traffic on port 587 because you are trying to use Google's Gmail service.

Thanks!
