 No Stories/Archiving - Weird Issue

I'm still running 1.0.0 and I can't find the known issues for that release on the site now. A search didn't turn anything up either. Roll Eyes

I have a very weird issue I've never seen before. On the main page/home page of one of my glFusion sites I suddenly have....NOTHING...ie no stories!

I immediately assumed it has something to do with story archiving...and it being a new month...even though I have no story archiving options set in any stories....so the stories should be "evergreen" in theory. To support my theory, I looked in the Article Directory and sure enough the stories are all in there neatly archived by month. Eek!

Hmmm....I was a little miffed but thought...oh well I'll figure it out later. Laughing Out Loud

So I posted a story today...the first one in August. No archive options set and saved it. And guess what? Still nothing on the home page. AND the story has gone straight into the Article Directory. Confused

Am I missing something in the site configuration to do with story archiving? Because none of my individual stories have archiving options set. Any ideas on what is happening? Mad

Thanks in advance...

Ok I've been fiddling around a little more and my problem sounds a bit like this one except I have the reverse. Anonymous users can see the stories...but when I'm logged in I can't see them....any of them.

So I'm thinking now it's a permissions issue. But why all of a sudden...and why ALL stories. Hmmmm. Confused

Ok I think I know what is going on. I've gone into my user profile on the site...and under content I suddenly find myself as an "excluded" author. Strange.

And the worst bit? I can't UN-exclude myself! Laughing Out Loud Laughing Out Loud Laughing Out Loud

Ummmm...looks like a bug? I can neither add further excluded authors...nor remove any that were previously excluded. Roll Eyes

Any suggestions on how to fix it?

I can't find the known issues for that release on the site now.

They were overwritten when v1.0.1 was released, since they were all addressed. But, you're right, I can see the value in retaining the old information and restored v1.0.0's data as well, and just moved it down below the current crop of known issues Big Grin In the top menu, click on Support --> glFusion Known Issues.

Strange indeed! Any chance you can PM or email me your site address and a temporary admin account login so I can take a look?

Thx!

Jill,

I think I have tracked down the cause of your woes (hopefully). Big Grin

In your Configuration, your Site URL is set to http://yoursitename/community, which when I go there (http://yoursitename/community/index.php) all looks well, your pic and bio is above your stories, etc. But if I click on the Home link in the menu, I noticed that it is going to http://yoursitename (without the /community) which seems to be a different set of public_html files No stories are there, and it is a different set of static pages that are on the front page.

I took the liberty of setting the Home link in your menu at http://yoursitename/community to %site_url%, which echoes the setting you have in your config for Site URL. Also, note that you can use this shorthand for referencing menu locations on your site, rather than hard coding the site name. So for example, you could use %site_url%/staticpages/index.php?page=birthday-list to create a link in the menu to that page. This way, if you ever decide to change your site name or path details, you won't have to go back and change all those links in the menu. In looking at some of your other menu links, I see some have the /community/blah, and some don't, so you might want to revisit the rest of your menu links and make sure they are all pointing to the right place. Big Grin

Like I said, I don't know what files you have at http://yoursitename, but they aren't related to those in http://yoursitename/community as evidenced by none of the 4 static pages you have in the /community site are what is appearing when you are at the yoursitename only site.

Hope this makes sense!

If it does, and all is well, then feel free to delete the account you created for me, if not, let me know and we'll keep digging. Big Grin

Thx!

Eric

Hi Eric....sorry no that didn't fix my issue. My stories are being hidden from me because I am listed as an "excluded author" within my user profile. (I can see the stories when I am not logged in.) The main problem is that I can't UN-exclude myself so that I can see the stories again when I am logged in...and for that matter I can't ADD other excluded authors either!

I'm not sure why this has happened all of a sudden. It's the first time I've had this issue...and I've been running the site with GL since about June 2004 and then with glFusion since the very first version came out. It normally wouldn't be a big deal but on this particular site since I'm the only poster! Laughing Out Loud On some of my other sites...we have multiple authors...so it wouldn't be such a problem there.

Oh and you discovered my unconventional setup...where I have glFusion setup in the /community folder....but I don't use the glFusion section as the whole site...nor is the glFusion home page used as the "home" page of my site. My actual home page is in the root of the site...and is just skinned with the glFusion header and footer to keep some uniformity on the site. Why? Because I wanted more control over the standard glFusion (originally GL) home page...and I've found that staticpages sometimes do not suit my needs. (Just call me a control freak! Laughing Out Loud Laughing Out Loud Laughing Out Loud :winkSmile

I've kept your admin account intact...if you want to do some more digging...I'm stuck for now. Confused Although I'm considering upgrading to 1.0.1...just to see what that does. Hmmm.

I gotcha. Big Grin

I would certainly say there is a bug there, and unfortunately it exists all the way back in geeklog 1.4.1 as far as I can tell. So yeah, if you highlight any name in the Exclude Authors column, and click save, it hides that author. But if you ever want to change your mind, your out of luck. There is no way to "un-highlight" that name!

You will have to go into your database (using the command line, or a tool like PHPmyAdmin) and in the gl_userindex table, remove the entry in the "aids" column. The SQL code you run would look something like this:

PHP Formatted Code
UPDATE `insertyourdatabasename`.`gl_userindex` SET `aids` = '' WHERE `gl_userindex`.`uid` =4 LIMIT 1 ;

Note that 'aids' = '' has two single quotes with no spaces in between. It isn't a double quote.

I will submit a tracker issue here at glFusion and also at geeklog.net. Good catch on an obscure usability bug.

Thx!

Eric

Laughing Out Loud Embarrased

Well, it looks like you and I both need to learn how to use our browsers better. After reporting it to the geeklog bug tracker Dirk responds:

Works for me.

It helps if you know how to use your browser ;-) That list is a
multi-select list, so you can select multiple entries. To un-select, you
usually need to hold down another key while clicking on the entry. It's the
Command key on my Mac (using Firefox 2). Other OS / browsers may use other
keys, e.g. Control.

So, sure enough, by holding down the CTRL key, and clicking on the highlighted name, it un-highlights it. Click Save, and you should be back to normal. Big Grin

Thx!

Eric

Well yes apparently we do...I tried that and it worked. Laughing Out Loud

But obviously it's not THAT user friendly....if we both missed it? Confused I mean I know how to select using Ctrl and Shift etc...Roll Eyes...but it never occurred to me to use the Ctrl key in that situation...especially as I only had one name in the exclusion list. AND the name doesn't disappear from the exclusion list after you do that...it is just no longer "highlighted". I personally think it should disappear from the list...otherwise it is confusing.

Thanks for the follow-up though. Much appreciated! Big Grin

Hey, thanks for following all the way through with that one. I just ran into the same "obscure" issue and was on my way to edit the db until I read through this topid all the way.

I suppose the solution makes sense but I agree, it's not THAT user friendly...but at least I know now Thumbup

I dont know if this is the same in 1.0.0 as in 1.1.5 but if i change this:

/admin/configuration.php -> Languages and Locale -> Locale -> Locale: en_GB

to sv_SE the news and stories only shows up for anonymous users.
